Lessons from a hunger strike
For seven days, Rep. Karen Clark and I refused food to protest a rulemaking provision in the Public Safety bill which would make it nearly impossible for undocumented Minnesotans to get driver licenses. We did this in solidarity with the immigrants' rights coalition—these organizations have been fighting this ID issue for a decade.
Thanking the governor for meeting with community members impacted by the legislation, we ended our strike.
Rep. Clark and I would never have thought that we could go for seven days without food. We learned the body is amazing and resilient, even when we did nothing for it, it kept working for us—this is how government should operate and this is the type of Mayor I will be; in the fight with you.
